The
Housing Mediation Service has no connection with the courts. It was
created by HOME and the Apartment Association; REIA joined us as
sponsors a few years ago. Each sponsor organization contributes
about $5,000 which is used to pay professional mediators by the case.
The services are free to the participants. Most of the cases are
pre-eviction. Typical case is: Landlord threatens eviction or gives
a notice to leave, Tenant calls HOME which arranges for mediation if
the parties are willing and it looks like it may be useful. We also
often use it for reasonable accommodation requests and neighbor
disputes. Anyone can call and request mediation, but most of the
cases originate with HOME. See www.housingmediation.org/
