All rental housing is covered by the Ohio Landlord Tenant Law; some types of housing have additional protections.  How do you know what type of housing it is?

What are the types of assisted housing
  • Project based Section 8:  Tenant pays 30% of income for rent.  Private owner.  Oversight by HUD.
  • USDA Rental Assistance:  Tenant pays 30% of income for rent.  Private owner.  Oversight by USDA
  • Public Housing:  Tenant pays 30% of income for rent.  Owners by the local Municipal Housing Autority.  Oversight by HUD PIH in Cleveland
  • Housing Choice Voucher:  Tenant pays 30% of income for rent.  Private owner.  Oversight by local Municipal Housing Authority. (local MHA has oversight from HUD PIH in Cleveland)  Housing Choice Voucher Fact Sheet.

A particular property may have more than one subsidy.
 Clues to figure out what type of housing it is

How do you make out your rent check? 
Often property name, then use google or ohio preservation compact database to search.
Sometimes management company name, then use google to find company website.  often company websites will show a list of all the properties the company manages.

Look at the lease!  Private owner/HUD assisted has a HUD MODEL LEASE-good clue, huh?

Look on the bulletin board at the office.  LIHTC are required to post OHFA contact info; Privately owned HUD assisted properties are required to post HUD or AHSC contact info.  on the bulletin board in the office.  USDA properties are required to post USDA contact info.
